Ascension Day
7.30am: Holy Communion
The President of the Eucharist is The Very Revd Nicola Sullivan, Dean of Southwell.
The Preacher is The Revd Canon Dr Richard Frith, Canon Precentor.
The Great Fifty Days of Eastertide form a single festival period in which the tone of joy created at the Easter Vigil is sustained through the following seven weeks, and the Church celebrates the gloriously risen Christ. On the fortieth day there has from the late fourth century been a particular celebration of Christ’s ascension. He commissions his disciples to continue his work, he promises the gift of the Holy Spirit, and then he is no longer among them in the flesh. The Ascension is therefore closely connected with the theme of mission. The arrival of the promised gift of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost (this year on Sunday 31 May) completes and crowns the Easter Festival.
Please do join in at home as you are comfortably able: you may wish to stand, sit and kneel as you normally would in church (we have included instructions for posture in the order of service for this reason), and/or to speak and sing along with the congregational elements of the service.
A video of the Service will appear below at 7.30am. You do not need to sign in to watch it. Please refresh your browser by pressing F5 if the video doesn't play.
Ascension Day Holy Communion
Reflection and Compline
from Ascension Day to Pentecost
with Canon Richard Frith at 7.30pm
The ancient office of Compline derives its name from a Latin word meaning com-pletion (completorium). It is above all a service of quietness before rest at the end of the day, but the simplicity of the service also lends itself to reflection and prayerfulness as we move towards the great feast of Pentecost.
