The Education Department at Southwell Minster would like a collection of knitted/crocheted/sewn/felted Green Men or Women (inspired by the Minster’s Chapter House carvings) for use in education visits to the cathedral and for outreach as part of the Lottery funded ‘Leaves’ conservation project. We will be awarding prizes (judged by local children) for 3 entries – criteria to be decided by the children.
A ‘Green Man’ is a face surrounded by leaves and/or flowers, sometimes with leaves growing out from the mouth. Entries don’t need to be exact copies of our carvings, but please use them for inspiration. We can send images to you on request or search for ‘Southwell Green Men’.
UPDATE JUNE 2020: We are very much looking forward to receiving your Green Men and Women creations and to being able to use them in our creative learning sessions both in the Minster and for outreach.
We are unable to accept packages at this time due to Covid-19, so the competition will remain open until the autumn. Please hold on to your entries for now – in the meantime, please send a photo to office@southwellminster.org.uk if you have one for us to share on social media!
We hope the judging by local schoolchildren will proceed as planned, as will the small exhibition of entries.
It is great to know that so many people have enjoyed being creative and supporting the Education Department at the Minster. We will post a further update in due course.
