Mortality is one of the few certainties in life, and this concert offers two contrasting views of it from great philosophers of music, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Both are full of an awesome beauty, and suggest there is nothing to fear … Debussy was more concerned with the natural world and his marvellous quasi-symphony La Mer is the finest orchestral evocation of the moods of the sea.
