Into the Woods, a striking photography exhibition by Martin Leighton.

Monday to Saturday 8.30am – 6.30pm
Sunday 8am – 4.30pm

Hi, I’m Martin Leighton, a fine art photographer from Nottingham. This is my third year exhibiting at the awesome Southwell Minster—such a fitting and perfect venue for my work.

As an artist, I photograph people in the landscape, seascapes, nightscapes, and occasionally buildings or street scenes. But my favourite subject by far is woodland. Nottingham is home to some of the most beautiful woodland in the UK—and, I’d argue, the world.

No wonder Robin Hood spent most of his time in Sherwood Forest. There’s something spiritual and mystical about the woodlands around here that I find endlessly inspiring.

I often shoot around Moorgreen, and some of the images you’ll see here were taken there, as well as at the stunning Felley Priory. Felley Woods is also where D.H. Lawrence spent time and found inspiration—something I definitely relate to.

I also photograph in the Peak District, where the ancient woodlands and frequent fog create an atmosphere I love. Fog, in particular, adds a cinematic quality to the scenes—sometimes ethereal, like something from The Lord of the Rings, and other times eerie, like the opening of a great thriller.

Some of the images in this exhibition were taken in Scotland too. But every image on display features a group of trees—whether deep in the woods or silhouetted above them. I like trees… what can I say?

The images are inspired by the legend of Robin Hood—mainly the 1991 classic film—and if you decide to take one home, it’s like adding an extra window to your house that looks out onto another beautiful world.

I hope you enjoy the exhibition, and if you have time, I’d love for you to leave some feedback.
