12 Organists battle it out for 24 hours to raise money for our Quire Organ.

24 hours of world-class organ music culminating in the Grand Finale - a 'Last Night of the Proms' style spectacular featuring the Cathedral organists and choir.

Join us for our Harvest Festival at Southwell Minster – a yearly opportunity to give thanks to God for all his gifts, to celebrate the end of the year’s harvest with our local farming community, and to pray for our world and its climate at the end of a record-breaking summer. During this time of national mourning, Southwell Minster will be staying open until 7.30pm. We invite you to sign the book of condolence, light a candle, and spend some time in private prayer and reflection as we remember Her Majesty The Queen.

The book of condolence will be available until the day of the funeral (Monday 19 September).

The three symbols at the bottom represent the three wells of Southwell. You can find the coat of arms on the one of the gates of the Chapter House and on the back of Bishop Hoskyns cope which he wears in his bust.

Facing the war memorial is the British Legion Wind

Facing the war memorial is the British Legion Window which was created and installed in 1971 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Royal British Legion being granted by the Royal Charter. The window displays a patterned border and with the crest displayed in the middle.

Each of our new plants explored last week has a sign with a pen and ink drawing by artist Sarah Simblet. Sarah’s style has a naturalistic quality reflecting the beauty of these plants. Can you find all the signs in the garden?

Sarah’s artwork has been made into a series of postcards which can be purchased in the Cathedral Shop. The Cathedral Shop is open Tuesday – Saturday 10 am – 4pm and Sunday 11.30am – 3.30pm.

All interpretation shown has been created as part of the Leaves of Southwell Project funded by @heritagefunduk.

Archbishops' Palace 👑
The path from the south door leads directly into the Archbishops' Palace. The Archbishops of York have had a residence here at Southwell since 956 when Archbishop Oskytel was given land by King Eadwig. The building we see today is from the building works completed in 1452.

Inside the Palace, one of the most impressive rooms to see is the State Chamber. It was used by visiting Monarchs and Archbishops as a place to stay and to give an audience. We have had many significant guests visit here from King Richard the Lionheart to Charles I. We even had King James I asking to buy the Palace off the Archbishop of York in 1603.

In 2010, the Archbishops' Palace was restored and revitalised as part of a @heritagefunduk project. The Palace was re-dedicated in October 2014 by the Most Reverend John Sentamu, Archbishop of York.

He described them as ‘one of the purest symbols of Western thought surviving in Britain’.

This memorial was designed by W. D. Caroe in 1919

This memorial was designed by W. D. Caroe in 1919 to commemorate those killed in the First World War. The upper section lists the names of those who perished in the First World War from the Southwell Parish area. Those who died in the Second World War were later added in a separate panel. This memorial is quite striking and provides a place to remember those who gave their lives for their country.

These plants include Hops, Rose, Vine, Acer campestre (Field Maple), Midland Hawthorn, Acanthus Mollis (Bear’s Breeches), Artemisia absinthium (Wormwood), Potentilla and Fig Tree.

Its amazing to think that over 700 years ago, the plants which we have planted would have been seen and used by the same people who carved the Leaves of Southwell. What plants do you think will be around in another 700 years?

The Chapter House was the last major building proj

The Chapter House was the last major building project at the Minster and dates to 1287 – 1300. The Chapter House was commissioned by Archbishop le Romayne (the younger) after being inspired by his father’s commission of a Chapter House at York Minster. Our Chapter House has been described as the ‘great climax’ of a visit to the Minster with our unique and yaw dropping 13th century leaves carvings.

Filled with over 16 different species of plants, a range of mythical creatures and faces, our Chapter House originally would have been a meeting place for the canons to discuss the day-to-day church business.

Recently our Chapter House has been conserved and reinterpreted as part of the #LeavesofSouthwell project funded by @heritagefunduk. For the first time ever in over 700 years, everyone can enter this amazing space with the instalment of our cantilever lift!

It was believed that the Archbishop’s Palace had been ransacked by Scottish forces during the Civil War, but the truth was revealed in 1818 - it was actually the Southwell townspeople, who wanted the stone for foundations for their houses! 🏠

The ‘Flight of the Egypt ‘was created by Rober

The ‘Flight of the Egypt ‘was created by Robert Kiddey which was given to the Minster in 1987 which depicts Mary and Joseph and the Baby Jesus fleeing into Egypt to escape the evil King Herod.

This wooden piece of artwork can be seen as timeless in today’s society with the current refugee crisis. The artist has put light humour into this piece whilst reflecting the darkness of this issue by contrasting the carvings of the drained and tired donkey and the superior looking camels.

A new structure situated in the garden is our new

A new structure situated in the garden is our new outdoor learning space known as the ‘Octagon’!

Inspired by the 8 sided Chapter House and the Early English arches of the Minster, the Octagon is a place were everyone can sit and enjoy nature’s calls in the garden. Our Octagon has a very especially wooden carving inside, carved by our very own Canon Nigel Coates. Make sure to look out for this sweet little bird waiting for you.

The Quire is a place where the clergy would have s

The Quire is a place where the clergy would have sat and worshipped during services. This space was original exclusively for the clergy only during the medieval period. Today, anyone can sit in the quire and is often the place, where our evensong services take place.

Less than one hundred years after the Norman Quire was finished, it was deemed too small for the number of canons and was demolished in 1240. The new quire was rebuilt twice the size and in the very different architecture style of ‘Early English Gothic’.

Our quire is home to a brass eagle lectern made in 1503. This lectern has a fascinating history including being in Newstead Abbey’s lake for 250 years.
