The Chapter has made the difficult and sad decision to close the Cathedral for public worship and private prayer from Saturday 16 January. This is a critical time for containing the spread of the new variant of the virus. Our staff have carefully complied in making the Cathedral ‘Covid-secure’, but at this stage of the pandemic when the NHS is close to the delivery of the vaccination programme, we do not want to expose our verger team or anyone coming into the Minster to unnecessary risk. The unequivocal advice from Public Health England is to ‘Stay at Home’. The Minster will open for funerals and for recording of worship which will all be online. The Leaves Project construction works continue. Please join us in praying for deliverance from this terrible time for so many people, and especially pray for the NHS staff, emergency services and other key workers who are working to the limit to support everyone.
“We have taken the decision to close the Minster with a heavy heart. The offering of worship and prayer in this holy place is core to our ministry and mission, but we must take action to protect our staff and all who come to the Minster. We will keep everything under review and open again when we know it is safe to do so.”
The Very Reverend Nicola Sullivan
Dean of Southwell
The Minster will open for funerals, and for the recording of worship which will be available online.
