Publications and Research

The following academic papers relevant to Thiman are held in the collection.

A Master of Church Music Thesis (1958) by Jerry Marcus O'Neal
'Eric Harding Thiman: His Sacred Choral and Sacred Solo Music'
Degree Awarded by The School of Church Music, South Western Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort worth, Texas

An MPhil Thesis (2000) by Richard Archer
'Music in the English Non-Conformist Churches in the Twentieth Century'
Degree Awarded by The University of East Anglia
This contains a chapter about Thiman (only two composers warrant a chapter to themselves)

In addition, the collection actively supports people engaged in further research:

  • David Dewar is a research student at Bristol University, looking into the relationship between amateur and professional music making in the early 20th century – research that began with, and will include an important focus on, Thiman. http://www.bristol.ac.uk/school-of-arts/people/david-r-dewar/
  • Matthew Hoch, Associate Professor of Voice at Auburn University, Alabama, plans sabbatical research into Thiman and Somervell in late 2020 – if the Corona Virus permits travel by then.
  • John Dressler, Professor Emeritus of Musicology at Murray State University, Kentucky, is in the early stages of planning a bio-bibliography on Thiman, following the publication of similar works on Finzi, Rawsthorne, Alwyn and Bantock. https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/contributors/Dressler,%20John%20C./?view=book
