Today's #Southwell140 exhibition object is this very handsome Green Man.
We have a lot of them in the Chapter House at the Minster – can you find them all?

The green man, or foliate head, is an architectural motif of a face of, or surrounded by, foliage, which spreads out from the middle of the face. Apart from a purely decorative function, the Green Man illustrates rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring.

It is likely that the masons took their inspiration from the leafy surroundings of the area when decorating the Chapter House. Sherwood Forest was a vast expanse of Nottinghamshire at the time the Chapter House was built and would have stretched to the Minster.

This is LADY OAK
She is our #Southwell140 exhibit for today.
There are lots of Green Men but it is a rare thing to find a Green Woman and what a fine woman.

She is in the Chapter House – can you find her?

Also known as a foliate head, the green man is an architectural motif of a face made of, or surrounded by, foliage, which spreads out from the middle of the face. HIDDEN PIGS 🐷
These delightful little creatures are hidden underneath a column in the Chapter House. There’s so much to see in the Chapter House – don’t miss them! Take a seat and have peak. The pigs are feeding on acorns beneath an oak tree. There are more little pigs hidden elsewhere in the Minster, do you know where? 🐽

Our final #Southwell140 object this week is our very handsome hare.
He is called QUERCUS LEPUS which means ‘Oak Hare.’
Imagined and drawn by Annie Cast-Coombs, this inspired hare was chosen as the winning design in the Magical Forest Competition, 2022. The drawing was then transformed into a carving which was made from one block of stone by mason Paul Ellis @paulellis64

Quercus Lepus is the most recent addition to the Chapter House stone carving family. You must come and meet him!🐰

Today’s #Southwell140 exhibition object is
Pevsner’s ‘The Leaves of Southwell’ (1945)

Nikolaus Pevsner (1902 - 1983) was a German-born art historian who fled Nazi Germany to England. He came from a family of Russian-Jewish fur traders. He wrote the renowned "Buildings of England" series. It took Pevsner 23 years to compile all 46 volumes. Pevsner first used the phrase ‘The Leaves of Southwell’ and it has stuck ever since!

A #funfact about this book is that The photographs are by Frederick Attenborough
(father of national treasures David and Richard!) who was born in Stapleford, Nottingham.

Our first #Southwell140 exhibition object of the week is this
DRAWING OF A ROSE
by artist Sarah Simblet. The rose is a symbol of love. In the Christian tradition it is associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary - Southwell Minster is the parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. 🌹

In the Roman period during Rosalia Festival (The Day of Rose Adornment) Romans would gather roses on this day and place them on the graves of their loved ones to remember them. It was celebrated on various dates, primarily in #May. The practice was popular in England. People would collect Rosa Canina from local hedgerows (these days it would be better to grow your own rather than deprive the bees of their wild roses in our dwindling hedgerows) 🐝

LEAVES OF SOUTHWELL🍂
These fluid carvings of plants, animals and green men found within the Chapter House are of exceptional quality. Regarded as the best example of 13th century naturalistic carving in the UK and globally important. They were voted the nation’s number one cathedral treasure!

As part of our exhibition you can also see these carvings (pictured), which were crafted by modern-day stone masons which recreate the Leaves of Southwell using the same techniques as the original masons would have used. We use these leaves when working with schools.

Our 14th and final #Southwell140 exhibition object for #April is this
JETON TOKEN
Made of copper alloy, it is dated between 1497-1547 and was found in Southwell. It is a French coin in the Chatel Tournois style. It would've been used for counting and also sometimes for playing games, akin to a modern day poker chip in casino games. This object can be viewed upstairs in the State Chamber.

This weekend is your last chance to see all 14 object for April on the theme MEDIEVAL LIFE: PEOPLE & PLACE. We hope you can visit us. Next month there will be 14 more object and a new theme for May!

This beautiful patchwork window made from fragment

This beautiful patchwork window made from fragments of medieval glass found in the Minster is our first #Southwell140 this week! And what a way to start the week, this is incredibly beautiful despite its make-do-and-mend aesthetic.

The glass was found hidden away in a room above the Chapter House. A large “B” near the top of the window is for a man called Butler, who leaded the glass in 1920. This is where it gets its name: The 'B' Window.

This is the only window in the Minster containing medieval glass. Much of England’s medieval stained glass was destroyed during the Reformation.

You must come and view it on a sunny day to see it in all its splendour!

Our final #Southwell140 object this week is
THE HEADLESS CLERIC
Who could it be?
There are several suggestions that this is an Archbishop, or a high ranking member of the church. He is close to the East End of the church so it is likely to be someone of importance.

This is the only medieval statue we hold at the Minster. The effigy is carved from alabaster which was fashionable around the 1300s. Effigies would often be painted to look like the person. But without his head the identity of this person remains unsolved.

Research is ongoing as we continue to see how many secrets can be revealed. Like what happened to his head? Where did it go?

This is a former chantry chapel now offers visitors a sanctuary of peace to reflect and contemplate. 'Light Of The World’ by Peter Eugene Ball is displayed here.

DONKEY CARVING
But look close up, what is going on with its poor neck?? This donkey either has a very flexible neck or one of the masons made a mistake!! We all make mistakes and can learn from them - we doubt this stone mason made the same error again! The stone carving is situated on the right-hand side of the Sanctuary, a sacred area within a church, often containing the altar.
