A collection of windows which were designed by Patrick Reyntiens in 1996 (the same artist as the Angel Window, our first #Southwell140 exhibit this month!). The first angel window in this collection is ‘The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden.’

Southwell Minster is delighted to announce the new

Southwell Minster is delighted to announce the new interim Dean of Southwell. The Revd Canon Dr Neil Evans joins us for a handover throughout October before being installed at a Service of Evensong on 4th November.

Neil says, “I am delighted to have been invited to be Interim Dean at Southwell Minster. Debbie and I have been worshipping at the Minster since our arrival in Nottinghamshire, following my retirement from St Paul’s in the summer, and we had already fallen in love with it! I am very excited by the prospect of assisting with the mission and ministry of the Minster and getting to know the Cathedral community.”

Today’s #Southwell140 exhibition object is our
MILLENNIUM PILGRIM ✨
The sculpture carved by Rory Young, was commissioned by the Friends of Southwell Cathedral and installed in 2001. It depicts a man stepping into the new millennium and a new future. His shroud symbolises his past which he is leaving behind. The blue mark, an discolouration in the stone was intentionally kept by the sculpture to show that no-one of us is without imperfection.

Come and see the Moon like never before at Southwell Minster this October!

Measuring seven metres in diameter, the moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface.

Our 14th and final #Southwell140 exhibit for #September are these...
MODERN STONE FACES 😎
In the 1960s, Stonemason David Hardy created a unique set of carved faces on the outside of the Minster. Here is 8 year old Malcom Fisher, the youngest of the choirboys, posing with his stone doppelganger!
The faces also include of Minster notables: a Bell ringer and Verger, a Clockwinder and a Dog whipper.

Our #Southwell140 object this today is...
MAUNDY MONEY 👑💰
For centuries kings and queens participated in Maundy ceremonies, commemorating the Last Supper, washing feet and giving gifts to the poor. By the 1700s, monarchs stopped washing feet and only gave money.
On 19th April 1984, Queen Elizabeth II visited the Minster to distribute Maundy Monday. In the white purse there are special silver Maundy coins which are the same number of pence as the Queen’s age in 1984. In the red purse there is ordinary money. This is a symbol of a gift to the poor.

WAR MEMORIAL
Designed by W D Caröe in 1919 to commemorate those killed in the First World War. The lower sections was added after the Second World War and lists those killed in the conflict.

A triptych is a painting in three parts. This painting was created in 1988 by Hamish Moyle, a member of the Little Gidding Community, and was inspired by Dame Edith Sitwell’s poem ‘Still Falls the Rain’. A triptych is a painting in three parts.

Today’s #Southwell140 exhibition object is the Minster’s
GREAT WAR MEMORIAL WINDOW ✨
This window is one of the most recent editions to the Minster. The window and plaque were designed by Nicholas Mynheer in 2014 and installed in 2016 as a tribute to those from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire who lost their lives during the First World War.

No photograph can recreate the splendour of this window lit-up on a bright day, so visit us and see it up close! Learn the significance behind each panel of the window. Exhibition entry is free, donations welcome. The vibrant bright colours really stand out as you walk past and provide a moving tribute to the sacrifice made.

Our first #Southwell140 object this week is...
ROBERT ‘MOUSEMAN’ THOMPSON’S MICE 🐭
The story goes that in 1919, Thompson was carving a piece of furniture when he joked with a friend about “being as poor as a church mouse.” This friend gave him the idea to carve a tiny mouse on the piece he was working on. He liked it so much that he decided to add a mouse to everything he made after that!

The altar rails and the Bishop’s Seat (Cathedra) were made at Thompson’s Yorkshire studio – can you find his signature mouse?

We have 28 mice at the Minster but they do have a habit of moving! How many can you spot?🔎

This cross made form used bullet/bomb shell cases. It resides in the Airmen's Chapel at the south-east end of Minster. This area is dedicated to the people who fought in the Royal Air Force during the First World War.

Our #Southwell140 object today is
THE KATYN MEMORIAL ✝
During the Second World War many Polish refugees came to Britain to fly with the RAF or to work in the Nottinghamshire Coalfields. This memorial remembers the 14,500 Polish Prisoners of War who were killed in the Katyn Forest and other places across Russia in 1940.

A small handful of soil from the Katyn Forest is buried at the bottom of the memorial.

CHORISTER PAY BOOK 💰
This handwritten ledger shows accounts from 1902-1977. For centuries the Minster has held daily choral services. Originally a group of singers called the Vicars Choral led these services and lived together, sharing a communal lifestyle. Toay the Cathedral Choice comprises 29 Boy and Girl Choristers, and 6 professional adult singers, known as Lay Clerks.
