This beautiful patchwork window made from fragment

This beautiful patchwork window made from fragments of medieval glass found in the Minster is our first #Southwell140 this week! And what a way to start the week, this is incredibly beautiful despite its make-do-and-mend aesthetic.

The glass was found hidden away in a room above the Chapter House. A large “B” near the top of the window is for a man called Butler, who leaded the glass in 1920. This is where it gets its name: The 'B' Window.

This is the only window in the Minster containing medieval glass. Much of England’s medieval stained glass was destroyed during the Reformation.

You must come and view it on a sunny day to see it in all its splendour!

Our final #Southwell140 object this week is
THE HEADLESS CLERIC
Who could it be?
There are several suggestions that this is an Archbishop, or a high ranking member of the church. He is close to the East End of the church so it is likely to be someone of importance.

This is the only medieval statue we hold at the Minster. The effigy is carved from alabaster which was fashionable around the 1300s. Effigies would often be painted to look like the person. But without his head the identity of this person remains unsolved.

Research is ongoing as we continue to see how many secrets can be revealed. Like what happened to his head? Where did it go?

Through the ages, candles have beautified and illuminated places of worship.
This is a former chantry chapel now offers visitors a sanctuary of peace to reflect and contemplate. 'Light Of The World’ by Peter Eugene Ball is displayed here.

DONKEY CARVING
But look close up, what is going on with its poor neck?? This donkey either has a very flexible neck or one of the masons made a mistake!! We all make mistakes and can learn from them - we doubt this stone mason made the same error again! The stone carving is situated on the right-hand side of the Sanctuary, a sacred area within a church, often containing the altar.

April's #Southwell140 Exhibition theme is:
MEDIEVAL LIFE: PEOPLE & PLACE

Today's #Southwell140 exhibit is a MEMORIAL to one of those people from this place; William Talbot. This is the oldest memorial in the Minster. Written in Latin, it tells the sorry tale of William Talbot.

" Here lies William Talbot
wretched and unworthy priest
awaiting the resurrection of the dead
under the sign of the Tau "

Why William Talbot has been memorialised like this remains a mystery. Tau is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet and resembles the cross and is representative of salvation. It’s believed that St. Francis of Assisi wore a Tau amulet to protect against plague and disease. ✝

Our final #Southwell140 object this week is this
LEATHER DRINKING HORN

This leather drinking horn is held by the Minster Library.
It would have been used for beer or ale. It is similar to the type of drinking vessels used in the medieval period. We affectionally refer to this as #RobinHood’s Drinking Horn 🍺🏹

Sherwood Forest was a vast area in the medieval period which would have stretched to the Minster. It was a hunting ground for the King. People also lived in towns and villages within the forest. There are carvings of Green Men in the Chapter House. It has been said that these may be an interpretation of what Robin Hood might have looked like.

Who guessed it? Tuesday's unusual object is a BOOK CLASP. It holds the covers of a book tightly together. Come and visit us to see it close up and also take a look at today's #Southwell140 exhibit 👀

ARROWHEAD
A piece of essential medieval equipment for anyone living during this time. It was found on Higgons Mead, near the Minster. Arrows were used in warfare, hunting, and sport. This arrow would have been used for hunting wild fowl. We can't be sure that it wasn't owned by a legendary heroic outlaw... 🏹

Come and enjoy our free exhibition #Southwell140 celebrating 140 years of being a cathedral, each month we celebrate a different theme and era of our long history.

This month make sure to look out for object 3/14 for April - this very handsome MEDIEVAL KING FIGURINE. Made of lead, it was used in processions and is inspired by a poem telling the cautionary tale of the ‘Three Dead Kings’.

PRIORY GRANT
A letter from Henry VI granting a priory to the Minster in times of financial woe.
Look closely and you can see the royal seal.

~‘Scarcely forty of them can be provided for and unless help is given some of them will have to leave’~
An example of an Alien Priory House is Pamber Priory in Hampshire. Alien priories were under the control of another religious house outside England. West Ravendale Priory belonged to Beaufort Abbey in Brittany, France.

We still need money today. It costs £3000 per day to stay open and free to access.

MEDIEVAL TILES
Our collection of medieval tiles are on show in the State Chamber here at the Minster. This one is a Peg hole mud stone roof tile from the site of Vicars’ Court. Many of the tiles were found on the site of a local prebendal house.
