Have you ever heard the sound of bells ringing on a sunny morning and wondered how you learn to do that? Or pondered how you might care for the ancient texts of a library that’s nearly 1,000 years old? How about sharing the history of an architecturally unique building? Or that of a palace was where King Charles I surrendered, and Cardinal Wolsey spent his last summer? Or learning to maintain the gardens and fabrics of one of the world’s oldest cathedrals? Or arranging flowers in one of the county’s most prestigious buildings?

On Wednesday 6 July 2022, from 11am to 4pm, all these questions and more will be answered. Southwell Minster, one of world’s most beautiful cathedrals, will be hosting a volunteer day to encourage anyone with an interest in learning new skills to come and join in and become part of the Minster family. There will be tours at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, which will include the gardens, the ancient library and the bell tower.

This event is aimed at any age, from 16 upwards, to show you just some of the wonderful things that our amazing volunteers take on on behalf of the Minster. Anyone signing up to become a volunteer will learn ‘on the job’ as full training will be given. There will be representatives from the following areas, who will answer any questions: bellringing, flower guild, gardening, stewards, library, needlework and the Cathedral Shop.

We aren’t asking for previous experience in any of these fields, just a keen enthusiasm and a genuine interest to learn and be part of our wonderful cathedral community. All our volunteers are essential to the upkeep and development of this unique building. In return for their time, we can offer full training and references where requested.

There will be complimentary tea and coffee available throughout the day and sandwiches available to purchase at lunchtime. References will be available, when requested, following a minimum of ten hours volunteering. So why not come along and see if any of our volunteer groups take your fancy? All welcome.

If anyone cannot attend the volunteer fair but would like to register their interest in volunteering at Southwell Minster, they can email office@southwellminster.org.uk or call 01636 817284.
