#Didyouknow that there are lots of little carved m #Didyouknow that there are lots of little carved mice scattered around the Minster? 🐁

How many can you count in the Minster? This mouse is located on the Bishop's chair!

The mice were carved onto wooden furniture by Robert Thomson. During his early career, one day another carver murmured to Robert about something about being ‘as poor as church mice’. Robert Thomson became fascinated with this and carved a mouse into his furniture from that day! A children’s author Susan Allen wrote a book about them, called ‘The Mice in the Minster’!

This beautiful wooden sculpture was initially crea This beautiful wooden sculpture was initially created in 1952 by Alan Coleman for the chapel of Kelham Hall as which was once the home to the Anglican religious order, Society of the Sacred Mission. This sculpture was later gifted to the Minster in 1974 where it welcomes visitors into the South Quire Aisle.

The sculpture shows a strong image of the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus.

As part of the #LeavesofSouthwell Project, the pro As part of the #LeavesofSouthwell Project, the project team decided to interpret the gardens beside the Archbishop’s Palace ruins and provide a space for everyone to enjoy and relax in.

The gardens draw inspiration from our medieval Chapter House and many of the plants you find within the Palace Gardens can be found in many of the Leaves carvings! The Paddock area of the garden which was previously private is now open to the public so there is so much more to explore at the Minster!

The Palace Gardens are also the location of our summer outdoor theatre and concert events. Make sure to check our website for more details!

The Gardens are open daily to visitors from 8:30am – 5pm or dusk (whichever is earlier).

The High Altar is the place where holy communion i The High Altar is the place where holy communion is celebrated. This is one of the grandest places in the Minster with the high early English Gothic arches and brightly coloured stained-glass windows.

Behind the altar, the four lower windows depict scenes from the life of Jesus who is shown in purple robes. These windows were originally made for the Temple Church in Paris in 1528 as a set of 12 and the 4 we have, were recovered from a pawn shop in Paris in 1818 by Henry Gally Knight.

Which window is your favourite? Can you spot Jesus riding the donkey?

Our tympanum is one of the oldest carvings in the Our tympanum is one of the oldest carvings in the Minster and has been dated to the late c.11th century. It has been suggested that this stone tympanum might have orientated from the early Anglo – Saxon church at the Minster.

The Stone carving depicts St Michael fighting the Dragon and David rescuing the Lamb. Can you see the dragons swirling tail? 🐉

The Sanctuary also has some unusual features which The Sanctuary also has some unusual features which makes the setting around the High Altar even more unique!

Usually, the East End will have a odd number of windows (3 or 5), but in our East End we have four. This is because the central rib (supporting post) goes down the wall between the windows to give extra support to the impressive structure.

Can you spot the hidden supporting structures painted in a stone colour in this area?

This window is one of the most recent editions to the Minster. The window was designed by Nicholas Mynheer and installed in 2016 as a tribute to those from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire who lost their lives during the First World War.

Looking down on the Nave, our ‘Christus Rex’ ( Looking down on the Nave, our ‘Christus Rex’ (Christ the King) provides a warming embrace for every visitor entering the Cathedral. Christus Rex was created by local artist, @petereugeneball and was installed in 1987. It is made from wood, beaten cooper and gold leaf. This glorious sculpture is just one of many sculptures by Peter Ball in the Minster and is quite a contrast to another sculpture found close by in the South Transept, Pieta.

‘Pieta’ is made from the same materials as Christus Rex and depicts a sorrowful picture of Mary holding the dead body of Jesus. Unlike Christus Rex, Pieta is a much smaller sculpture but still has the same colossal impact as Christus Rex.

Which is your favourite?

One of our favourite ‘mistakes’ to show visito One of our favourite ‘mistakes’ to show visitors is the difference in the level of the string casing in the Quire. Don’t let those large Early English arches fool you but there’s a mistake hiding in plain sight!

The Quire was rebuilt in the 13th century after the Norman Quire was deemed too small for the increasing number of canons. This meant that the stonemasons would have started the construction of our current Quire at the High Altar and from the crossing and met in the middle. Unfortunately, the masons didn’t quite get their calculations right and one side of the quire was lower than the other!

One team of masons decided to not try and hide their mistake and continued the string casing as planned with a little step in it. The other decided to cover it up by decorating above the arch to prevent it appearing lower than the others. Which do you think was more successful?
