Our #Southwell140 object today is THE KATYN MEMORI Our #Southwell140 object today is THE KATYN MEMORIAL ✝ During the Second World War many Polish refugees came to Britain to fly with the RAF or to work in the Nottinghamshire Coalfields. This memorial remembers the 14,500 Polish Prisoners of War who were killed in the Katyn Forest and other places across Russia in 1940. For centuries the Minster has held daily choral services. Originally a group of singers called the Vicars Choral led these services and lived together, sharing a communal lifestyle. Toay the Cathedral Choice comprises 29 Boy and Girl Choristers, and 6 professional adult singers, known as Lay Clerks. Our 14th and final #Southwell140 exhibition focus Our 14th and final #Southwell140 exhibition focus for #August are the graves of the first two Bishops of Southwell which rest beside the historic Minster building ⛪ ✝ Here rests the body of GEORGE RIDDING DD, forty-third Headmaster of St Mary’s College Winchester 1866-1884. First Bishop of Southwell 1884-1904 who was born March 16 1828 and fell asleep August 30 1904. ✝ Here rests the body of Sir EDWYN HOSKYNS 12th Baronet 2nd Bishop of Southwell 1904-1925, Jesus and Mercy who was born 22 May 1851 and fell asleep 2 December 1925 and of his wife Mary Constance Maud born 1853 Died 1939 This month’s exhibition is generously sponsored by The Friends of Southwell Cathedral. Our first #Southwell140 exhibition object this wee Our first #Southwell140 exhibition object this week is 1884 EMBROIDERED BANNER 🧵 Our Embroidery Guild recently discovered this exquisite Victorian banner from 1884. It has been conserved by the People’s History Museum and the original will soon be on permanent display in the Minster. The banner had been hidden away for years and was found at the back of a cupboard, just in time for our 140th Anniversary. A note listing the names of the embroiderers and designers (architects) was found with the banner. It would have taken them hours of dedication to create! It shows that it takes a wide, dedicated and diverse team with lots of different skills to make a cathedral! 🧵 If you'd like to meet the Needlework Guild why not join us for our annual Discovery Day on 5th September?🧵 Emma Frith and members of the guild invite you to delve into the cope chest and vestment presses to discover the importance of textiles and embroidery in worship. He welcomes all with open arms. Bishop Ridding became the first ever Bishop of Southwell, on 28th May 1884. It was a big day for Southwell. The bunting was flying and from the old station there were special trains constantly arriving during the morning and late into the afternoon which brought hundreds of visitors. The Cathedral was only open on the day of the Enthronement and reopened again four years later in 1888 when it had been refurbished. You can’t visit Southwell by train anymore, but you can bus, walk, travel by vehicle or even horseback to get here! Everyone is welcome. Entry is free. A cathedral is home to the Bishop’s Seat. This chair was made as a memorial to Bishop Mosley, who was Bishop from 1928 to 1941. Jesus said: “I am the Good Shepherd” 🐑🐏🐑 The Bishop carries a crozier (like a shepherd’s crook) to show this. This precious Crozier is kept in a case. Our final #Southwell140 object this week is a book Our final #Southwell140 object this week is a book from the Historic Chapter Library of the Minster: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF GEORGE RIDDING 📖 This book by Bishop Ridding’s wife, Laura, gives a loving account of her husband’s life as both schoolmaster and the first Bishop of Southwell. Ridding was a wealthy man so he donated all of his pay to those who needed it more. He chose to live in nearby Thurgarton to be close to the railway station, enabling him to visit all of his parishes. Bishop Ridding and his wife Laura dedicated their lives to helping people. Laura focused on the welfare of women and children and was a suffragist, advocating for women's rights. The mitre’s two peaks, symbolises the Old and New Testaments. This one was made in preparation for the 100th Anniversary of Southwell becoming a Cathedral. Our first #Southwell140 object this week is the B Our first #Southwell140 object this week is the BISHOP’S MITRE VERGE This shiny verge was made in 1982. A top of the verge is a Mitre (a Bishop’s hat) decorated with acorn leaves to reference the nearby Sherwood Forest. Where else can you find acorns in the Minster? 🌰🐿 If you were paying attend last month(!), you’d already know that Vergers are the people, usually dressed in a black robe/cassock, who take care of both the cathedral building and the people in it. They carry verges, which were originally used to keep crowds back!
