BECHER AND THE STORY OF THE WORKHOUSE💸🏫⛏
The Revd John Thomas Becher was Vicar-General at the Minster. He was a social reformer and pioneer of the Workhouse. Built in 1824, Southwell Workhouse was the first of its kind. Without a welfare state there was little relief or
help for the poorest in society.

Workhouses were created to provide work and a place to sleep for those that needed it. They provided food, shelter, work, basic healthcare and education. People would complete daily tasks such as breaking stones and picking rope apart (oakum). Conditions were harsh and the stigma associated with going to the workhouse was huge. The system dehumanised people. Families were separated and people were effectively criminalised for being poor.

Today’s #Southwell140 object, 11 of 14, is
THE NEWSTEAD ABBEY LECTERN 🦅
The lectern was gifted to the Minster in 1805 by the Dean of Lincoln, who had previously worked here at the Minster. Legend has it that the monks of Newstead Abbey hid this lectern in the lake at the Abbey. They were protecting it, as they feared it would be taken during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when Henry VIII closed religious houses and claimed their wealth. It remained there for 250 years!

Our first #Southwell140 exhibit this week are the
GALLY KNIGHT WINDOWS ⛪️
Located above the High Altar at the East end of the Minster, the windows were originally made for the Temple Church in Paris in 1528. They were created by master glassmaker Jean Chastellain. The windows were found in a Parisian second-hand shop by Henry Gally Knight, in 1815. Then presented to the Minster in 1818. On fitting they discovered the windows did not fit the size of the existing frame and had to be adapted to fit! What a task!

Henry Gally Knight was the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. Byron wrote a ballad about Gally Knight, calling him an inferior poet and accusing him of being overly obsessed with his appearance! Whatever Byron thought we’re pleased Henry Gally Knight was creative and thoughtful enough to gift them to the Minster as they look glorious in place!

WILLOUGHBY OF WOLLATON HALL 🦉
Francis Willoughby (1635–1672), an English naturalist travelled the globe researching the natural world. Willoughby was known for his pioneering work in the field of ornithology (the study of birds). His family owned Wollaton Hall, in Nottinghamshire – now home to the city’s natural history collection, of which Willoughby laid the foundations. The museum has over 750,000 specimens in its collection!

📖CLOSED FOR BUSINESS: Ewan Christian’s Restoration of Southwell Minster 1848-1888.
This book by Dr Harold Brooke gives a fascinating insight into the closure of the Minster, during restoration works. The Minster was in a bad state of repair, and was closed for nearly 40 years while it was restored! Christian repaired walls and masonry and re-roofed the building. He replaced the Pepperpots – restoring a much loved feature of the Minster. 🧂🧂

THE KING'S MESSENGER BADGE
The King’s (or Queen’s) Messenger Service has existed for over 800 years. The messengers carry diplomatic messages around the globe. This badge belonged to Andrew Basilico who was from Nottinghamshire. The badge was given to the Minster for safekeeping.

SOUTHWELL MINSTER WATERCOLOUR 🎨
This watercolour is by an unknown artist in the style of Thomas Girtin. The painting was, until recently, attributed to Girtin. In the summer of 1794 Girtin and Turner both visited Southwell Minster and found inspiration.

Visit us this July to this watercolour and other artworks from the changing landscape of Southwell and Nottinghamshire in the 1700s and 1800s and how the glorious Georgians flocked to this beautiful town.

THOMAS GIRTIN WATERCOLOUR 🎨
Thomas Girtin (1775-1802) was an English painter and watercolourist. He was a contemporary of J.M.W Turner. In 1794, Girtin visited Southwell, Lichfield, Lincoln and Peterborough. His patron, James Moore, encouraged him to study and sketch Britain's Gothic buildings. His career was cut short. Because of this his work is very rare!

SOUTHWELL THEATRE PLAYBILL 🎭
By 1816 Southwell had its own theatre. The Assembly Rooms were designed by Richard Ingleman: he was the grandson of the first Richard Ingleman who helped put out the 1711 fire. A teenage Lord Byron took part in a production at the fashionable venue. The Old Theatre is now a café and still has a room upstairs for performances. It is one of England’s few remaining Georgian theatres.

Happy Friday! Today’s #Southwell140 object is our deliciously stunning
BRAMLEY APPLE WINDOW 🍏
The first Bramley apple tree grew from pips planted by Mary Ann Brailsford in
her garden when she was a young girl in 1809. Mary never knew that she had planted a famous apple. The tree she had planted in the garden was later bought, along with her cottage, by Matthew Bramley in 1846.

The glass in our Bramley window was fitted in 2009. It was designed by Helen Whittaker and Keith Barley.

The Longest Yarn is coming to Southwell Minster in

The Longest Yarn is coming to Southwell Minster in September in a UK-FIRST as part of commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The Longest Yarn is an 80m 3D depiction of that fateful day, 6th June 1944, in wool art.

With 80 displays, each measuring one metre in length, depicting scenes of the world’s largest amphibious invasion, The Longest Yarn is something quite unique and not to be missed. The scenes include the build-up to D-Day in England, the horrors on the Landing Beaches and the bloody inland battles.

The installation will be first on display in Carentan, France, in May, before coming to Southwell Minster from 9-27 September

Our 14th and final #Southwell140 exhibition object for #June is this...
OSKYTEL THE DRAGON 🐲
This is Oskytel the Dragon. He is named after Bishop Oskytel, who later became the Archbishop of York. In the year 956, The King of Wessex gave Southwell and land around it to Oskytel. There are several damaged carvings in the Chapter House, including dragons. It is thought that theses were destroyed during the occupation of the Minster by Cromwell’s troops during the English Civil Wars. In medieval Europe, dragons were often associated with the Devil. Although we like to think Oskytel is a friendly creature! Oskytel the dragon lives in our beautiful Palace gardens, he keeps them calm and peaceful. Come and visit him this weekend! 🐉

Our penultimate #Southwell140 exhibition object is the
CLAY TOBACCO PIPE 🚭
These pieces of clay smoking pipe were found in Southwell.

Smoking tobacco was a popular pastime when it was brought to England from the Americas at the end of 16th Century. Although tobacco was widely accepted it still had its critics. King James I wrote that tobacco was: “lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the braine, dangerous to the Lungs..."

A clay pipe has a long tube of white clay with a bowl at the end, which usual has a small heel/spur in order to keep it upright when placed on a table. As clay pipes were prone to breaking and could be easily and cheaply replaced, their remains are littered throughout the country, turning up in fields, gardens, rivers and on building sites. Some carry exquisitely decorative bowls or manufacturers’ marks. Have you ever found any in your garden?🔎

Object number 12 of our #Southwell140 exhibition for June is the:
BARTMANN JUG 🧔‍
The term "Bartmann" translates as "bearded man." Can you see him? This fragment of salt-glazed stoneware is part of a Bartmann Jug. It was found in the garden of the Residence - this is where the Dean of the Cathedral lives. The jug would have been made in Frechen, near Cologne in Germany.

These jugs are also called "Count Bellarmine" and feature a mocking depiction of Catholic cardinal Robert Bellarmine. Bellarmine did not like the rise of Protestantism, which was popular in Germany. He was also took an anti-alcohol stance. It is thought that Dutch and English Protestants may have designed the jugs to ridicule the cardinal.

Our first #Southwell140 object this week is...
CARDINAL WOLSEY✝️

Thomas Wolsey (1473 -1530) was an English Catholic cardinal. This portrait of Cardinal Wolsey hangs in our State Chamber with other famous historical figures.

He became the Archbishop of York and then the Lord Chancellor, Henry VIII’s chief adviser. Wolsey failed to get an annulment for Henry's marriage and fell out of favour with the King. Wolsey was accused of treason and recalled to London by Henry. Luckily for him he died on the way from natural causes.

Wolsey spent his last days in Southwell. He wrote a letter which is embroidered on these cushions in the State Chamber.
