Yesterday we had the wonderful Dr James Wright lead a fascinating workshop on Mediaeval Stonemasons in our historic Chapter House ⚒️

We learned all about the different types of stone masons who may have built the Chapter House and what tools they might have used.

This workshop was part of the #LeavesofSouthwell project, funded by the @heritagefunduk

The Chapter House is now reopened after over a year of being closed due to conservation work. Why not, come and see the Chapter House restored to its full glory!

Dragons are one of the most popular motifs you can

Dragons are one of the most popular motifs you can find in throughout the Minster 🐉

We have a variety of dragons in different decorative materials including stone, wood and even stained glass!

Our oldest dragon carving can be seen on tympanum stone, battling against Archangel Michael. This stone carving can be dated around 1100 and may have come from the Anglo Saxon church which once stood on the Minster site.

#didyouknow that our great west window (also known as the angel window 😇) has over 300 angels in it? It has enough angels for every day of the year!

Our great west window was designed by painted by Patrick Reyntiens and was installed in the Minster in 1996.

Reyntiens described the window as “a great gathering of angels enjoying being with God, just all joy and worship”

This window depicts many symbols and stories from the Bible including the creation story. These all showcase the joy and glory of God!

Can you spot Mary amongst the angels in the window?

What a beautiful morning at the Minster! It’s a bit frosty but this view of the Minster makes it worth it! ❄️

📸 - taken at our south door. You can really see the sheer beauty of the Romanesque decoration on top of the door and windows plus a sneak peak at one of our pepperpot towers! These carvings are just one of the amazing things you can see at Southwell Minster!

Why not come and visit to see them for yourself! Visiting hours are 8:30am - 6:30pm Monday to Saturday and 8am - 4:30pm Sundays.

The Minster has been standing watch for over 900 years! If buildings could talk, I wonder what the Minster would tell us about, especially the stories it has seen over the years.

One minute, its the beautiful surrounding countryside and the next, the spectacular architecture of the Minster suddenly pops out of the trees with its distinctive Pepperpot towers!

#didyouknow that our lectern was thrown into a Lake at Newstead Abbey during the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1500s and remained hidden in the lake for more than 250 years!

Come see our beautiful brass eagle lectern, taking centre stage in our quire stalls during our visiting hours -
8:30am - 6:30pm Monday to Saturday and 8am - 4:30pm Sundays.

Rock of Ages – Mediaeval Stonemasons: The Architects of Europe ⚒️

18th January 2022, 2:00 – 3:30pm Chapter House, Southwell Minster.

A FREE half-day workshop led by Buildings Archaeologist, James Wright in our 13th century Chapter House on historic stonemasonry and the men who shaped not only the material but the architectural appearance of the mediaeval period. The discussion looks at quarrying, transporting, setting out, cutting, mason’s marks and fixing stonework. The place and influence of stonemasons in the history of architecture and how that relates to exciting new archaeological discoveries will also be addressed.

Most studies of medieval churches and cathedrals concentrate on the dates and sources of inspiration for the buildings. In this talk, Philip is going to look at the links between patrons and builders, to try to identify the aims of the people who paid for the work and the interpretation of these aims by the workers who tried to turn the objective into stonework, looking at both religious and secular buildings.
