Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿#21 Were t Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿#21

Were the delicate C13th carvings of the Chapter House originally painted?

The Chapter House is currently internally scaffolded as part of the #leavesofsouthwell project for essential conservation work allowing access to the highest levels, including the rib vaulted ceiling, for the first and only time in a generation!

Professor Chris Brooke has taken some microscopic samples from the highest levels to be examined and analysed, using a process called Raman Spectroscopy, by an international team from the Universities of Bradford and Ghent.

This should tell us if paint pigments are present. Preliminary results of earlier samples from lower levels taken by Chris and Dr Andrea Kirkham, were shared in one of our series of ‘Lockdown Talks’ in January, available to view on request from education@southwellminster.org.uk

Thanks to the @heritagefunduk and players for their support with this important project.

Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿#20 We’r Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿#20

We’re pleased to be able to share some images of the lighting to the outside of the Minster, newly installed in the last two weeks. This is part of the programme of repairs, updates and conservation taking place across the site as part of the #leavesofsouthwell project, part-funded by the @heritagefunduk

The new lamps provide ambient lighting to the grounds at night, improving safety and accessibility, while also supporting the new floodlights which will improve the visual impact of this beautiful building at night. We can’t wait to share the first images of the Minster lit up again soon!

Happy Shrove Tuesday / Pancake Day! Did you know Happy Shrove Tuesday / Pancake Day!

Did you know that traditionally people would make pancakes on Shrove Tuesday to use up all their fatty foods before Lent? This is why Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day.

Can you make a pancake this Shrove Tuesday and decorate it like one of our faces in the Chapter House?

Check out these #fantasticfaces pancakes which have been sent to us so far.

Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿#19 After Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿#19

After hours of careful preparation removing the old steps, the first of the new ones at the Chapter House entrance is in place, (the second about to be carefully lifted into position), while outside the new path lights are being installed and the old floodlights, now redundant, are being removed. An incredible 9 tonnes of ballast and 100 bags of cement were used to create bases for the attractive new lamps which will also light up the Minster at night. The grounds may still look like a building site, with fencing and trenches, but at last we begin to see the transformation taking shape both inside and out!

Thanks to the @heritagefunduk for their support with this important project.

Masons and Carvers: Recent work at the Minster, building the Chapter House and cutting ‘the leaves’.
Tuesday 9 February 2021
2.00pm on Microsoft Teams

The Chapter House has been subject to a series of excavations and studies over the last couple of years. Join Philip Dixon, Cathedral Archaeologist, as he explores what is now known of this fascinating building and discusses how our ancient ancestors created one of the greatest buildings of the 13th century – he’ll also show us how its very existence was due to decisions by a new Archbishop!

Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿 #18 Thing Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿 #18

Things are still looking a little different inside and outside the Minster at the moment, as our contractors have temporarily taken over the south quire aisle and entrance to the Chapter House. The slype (Chapter House passageway) is now in the finishing stages as stones for the new inspection pits are painstakingly measured, cut and placed by hand to ensure an exact match. These replace the old metal grates and will be almost invisible when finished!

There are lots more exciting developments to tell you about in the coming weeks as the project unfolds so watch this space!

We can begin to see our lovely Chapter House being We can begin to see our lovely Chapter House being restored to its former glory, but with some new 21st Century luxuries, all designed to improve conservation, access and visitor experience. Over the last couple of weeks, the on-site team have replaced all the stone floor slabs in the main Chapter House, connected the maze of underfloor heating pipes, positioned the base for the lift (more about that in future updates), and experimented with a mirror, designed to enable visitors to better see the wonderful rib vaulting and roof bosses.

#didyouknow it’s the ONLY stone vaulted Chapter House without a central supporting pillar in the country!? An incredible feat of engineering, especially considering it dates back to the 13th century!

Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿#15 Althou Leaves of Southwell Project Update 🌿#15

Although 2020 had its challenges for the #leavesofsouthwell project, there are plenty of wonderful community memories. In early spring, hard hat tours gave a unique opportunity to view the contractors at work on the roof.

Before lockdown, we partnered with Inspire Learning for a 'Leaf Printing' workshop and squeezed in a Family Fun Day and a conference focusing on the processes and people who made our leaves carvings.

During lockdown, a crafting competition was held with entries on display in the Minster when restrictions eased. An autumnal nature trail for families inspired children to create their own ‘Green Men’, while in December, Dr Sophie Hollinshead gave a popular online talk about winter traditions.

Our creative leaves-inspired outreach sessions with Reach Learning Disability were a great way to end 2020.

Thank you to National Lottery Heritage Fund and all those who have taken part in anything leaves-related throughout the year. We can't wait to show you what 2021 brings!
