Sponsor the Organathon’s youngest participant: George is just 7 years old and will be playing between 1 and 2pm on Saturday 30 September.
George lives in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, with his dad, mum, little sister Elizabeth and brother Alexander. He started playing the piano as a baby, sitting on his dad’s knee, and has been learning piano for two years at Ranby House School in Nottinghamshire under the watchful gaze of his teacher, Mr Matthew Wright. George has always loved experimenting on the piano, and particularly enjoys playing loudly! So when Mr Wright (himself a professional organist) suggested that he have a go on the school organ, George jumped at the chance to pull out all the stops. George now practises organ with Mr Wright every week alongside his piano lessons, where he’s working on finger dexterity and great technique.
George loves the power of the organ, and particularly enjoys the fact that on the school organ there’s not one but two keyboards – far more fun and possibility than a boring old piano! George’s two absolute organ heroes are Bach and Mr Wright, and he also loves watching Xavér Varnus playing the organ on the YouTube. When we asked him what else he loves about the organ, George said that he likes the fact that organs are located in church and its music calls the people to God.
So what’s next for George? He’d like to play the organ at St George’s Cathedral (Southwark), because he’s named in honour of Saint George, and then he’d like to play all over the world (his words!). George says he’s not intending to become a professional organist or musician: he’d like to become a motor engineer and have a “cars and pianos garage”.
