Cleaning and repairing delicate C13th stonework is a specialist job and part of the #LeavesofSouthwell project, supported by the Heritage Fund. Laura and Alex from Skillington’s Workshop are on site to carry out this skilled work to the unique stone vaulted 11.3m high ceiling of the Chapter House. Soft brushes and vacuum cleaners are used to collect the dust and dirt built up over the centuries, from every carved leaf or animal, boss and rib, while lime mortar is used to fill and repair the cracks by hand. It’s incredible to be able to get so close to these carvings!
